SHAWN EDWARDS
Theatre & Film Honor
Honors Awards 2026
May 24 | Gem Theater | Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District
A Voice That Elevated Black Storytelling
The 18th & Vine Arts Festival Foundation is proud to honor Shawn Edwards for his profound impact on film, media, and cultural storytelling β both in Kansas City and on the national stage.
For decades, Shawn Edwards has been more than a film critic. He has been a bridge β connecting Black filmmakers, actors, and creators to audiences who deserve to see themselves reflected with dignity and excellence.
As the longtime film critic for Fox 4 News (WDAF-TV), Shawn has conducted high-profile interviews with some of Hollywoodβs most influential directors, producers, and actors. But beyond the red carpets and premieres, his true impact lies in advocacy β amplifying diverse voices and championing meaningful representation in film and television.
Building Cultural Infrastructure, Not Just Coverage
Shawnβs work extends far beyond the camera.
He is a co-founder and executive producer of A Celebration of Black Cinema & Television, one of Hollywoodβs most respected platforms honoring Black excellence in film and media.
In Kansas City, he plays an instrumental role in the revitalization of the historic Boone Theater in the 18th & Vine Jazz District. Through programming, screenings, and youth film pathways, Shawn is helping shape Boone into a future-forward cultural hub for cinema, storytelling, and community engagement.
His work ensures that Kansas City is not only a place where stories are consumed β but where they are cultivated.
A National Platform with Kansas City Roots
Shawn Edwards is a two-time NAACP Image Award winner whose career reflects excellence, consistency, and purpose. His influence extends from Hollywood premieres to grassroots community initiatives β always centered on elevating Black stories with authenticity.
He has helped amplify projects that honor untold histories, including culturally significant films that shine light on overlooked narratives. His commitment to storytelling aligns directly with the mission of the 18th & Vine Arts Festival Foundation: preservation, celebration, and elevation of Black cultural excellence.
