J. LEROY BEASLEY

Visual Art Honor

Honors Awards 2026

May 24 | Gem Theater | Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District

A Sculptor of Form. A Photographer of Truth.

The 18th & Vine Arts Festival Foundation is proud to honor J. Leroy Beasley as the 2026 Visual Art Honoree — recognizing his decades of artistic discipline, creative evolution, and contribution to Kansas City’s visual arts landscape.

J. Leroy Beasley represents the quiet mastery of craftsmanship. His work does not chase attention. It commands it through intention, patience, and authenticity.

Built by Hand. Guided by Instinct.

Born in College Station, Arkansas, in 1958, Beasley built his foundation as a tradesman before discovering and nurturing a deep passion for the arts.

He is a self-taught sculptor whose work is defined by freeform creation. He uses no molds. No pre-fired casting. Each sculpture is shaped entirely by hand — guided by instinct, emotion, and movement.

His pieces are powerful yet balanced — strong in form, yet gentle in expression. His sculptures capture tenderness, humanity, and truth without excess.

This commitment to handcrafted artistry reflects the very spirit of 18th & Vine: discipline rooted in lived experience.

Expanding Through the Lens

While sculpture came naturally, photography opened a new frontier.

Beasley’s lens reveals subtle details often missed in everyday life — expressions, textures, moments suspended in time. His photography has become his primary artistic passion, further expanding his sculptural and painting practice.

In 2008 and 2012, he traveled throughout South Africa, documenting life and culture. Over the course of one month, he captured more than a thousand images of the Children of Africa — deepening his global awareness and artistic perspective.

Through these experiences, his work evolved from form to story.

A Recognized Presence in Kansas City

Beasley’s work has been exhibited in prominent spaces including:

• The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
• Leedy-Voulkos Art Center
• Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center
• Various local, national, and international venues

His artistic journey continues alongside his wife and fellow artist, Michelle Beasley.

He represents a generation of artists who developed mastery through lived experience, not shortcuts.
